Piriform’s CCleaner (short for Crap Cleaner, literally.) cleans up your hard drive as well as your registry and keeps your PC clean.
Description: After achieving over 200 million downloads, you would have to think a software is pretty darn good, right? I have used it on many computers and I’ve never had it crash, freeze, or act unreliably. With the features that it has and how well it functions, I have to say that CCleaner is worthy of the highest honor I can give it on this site. To see how many that is though, you’ll have to read (or skip) to the bottom of the post.
Compatibility: Windows 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP and XP 64, 2003, Vista 32 and 64
Necessary Info: CCleaner cleans the junk out of your different programs including:
- Internet Explorer - Temporary files, URL history, cookies, Autocomplete form history, index.dat.
- Firefox - Temporary files, URL history, cookies, download history.
- Opera - Temporary files, URL history, cookies.
- Windows - Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files.
- Registry cleaner - Advanced features to remove unused and old entries, including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more… also comes with a comprehensive backup feature.
- Third-party applications - Removes temp files and recent file lists (MRUs) from many apps including Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, MS Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and many more…
PROs: It cleans all the junk listed above and does it for free.
CONs: I haven’t yet figured out which check-box prevents the software from removing my commonly used Start Menu Items. I should probably be more diligent in my search but up till now, I haven’t been. This is pretty minor!

November 20th, 2008 at 3:47 pmThis program is amazing, after installing it 6 months ago I haven’t had serious spyware and trojan threats. After each internetsession I go and run this program.
It cleans all the unwanted cookies etc. I use this one in combination with another small program called Disk Cleaner. Perfect combination! This Makes My Day’s last blog post..Experimental photography by Sortvind

November 21st, 2008 at 4:09 amWell thats good one! Some are useful for cleaning up a really messy system to extend the life of an install a few months but many just do heaps of damage, you are better doing prevention rather than cure from piles of installed crapola, Try using Altiris SVS which is a virtual installing environment for installing programs you only want once or will rarely use to avoid it hooking into your real registry. and it’s free for personal use.

December 16th, 2008 at 1:00 amIf you have a system that will support the requirements and the technical knowledge, do all your surfing on a virtual pc, then kill the virtual box.
Download and install VMware Player. Create virtual machine. Google search “easymx” and go to the website. There are three flavors, choose any one you like. In the settings page, follow the instruction to fill in the options. When searching for an antispyware scanner that will protect and clean your PC it can get a little confusing. There are so many available it’s hard to know which one will work the best. If you’re like me, you’ve probably tried a variety of them all and found they basically all find the same types of bugs. Through my experimenting I’ve found that the antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy at (http://www.Search-and-destroy.com) works the best. Search-and-destroy Antispyware cleans and protects my computer just as good as any scanner, it gets rid of those nasty bugs and it does it all for less than many of the others available.
